Tire Safety Month: Everything You Need to Know
As October begins,
it’s time to focus on tyre safety in celebration of Tyre Safety Month. But what
exactly is Tyre Safety Month, and how can you ensure your tyres are in safe,
roadworthy condition?
What is Tyre Safety
Month?
Tyre Safety Month,
held every October since 2010, is an annual campaign by TyreSafe. It highlights
the importance of proper tyre care and the risks associated with underinflated,
damaged, or worn-out tyres.
Who Organises Tyre
Safety Month?
Tyre Safety Month is
spearheaded by TyreSafe, a UK charity founded in 2006, dedicated to tyre
safety. Their efforts have contributed to a 46% reduction in tyre-related
accidents resulting in serious injuries or fatalities. Supported by major tyre
manufacturers, retailers, and vehicle makers, TyreSafe has become a trusted
authority on tyre safety.
How Can You Check if
Your Tyres Are Safe?
There are several ways
to ensure your tyres are safe, TyreSafe’s ‘ACT’ campaign outlines three
essential checks:
- Air Pressure: Properly inflated tyres
are crucial for vehicle handling. Under- or overinflation can cause
issues, so use a tyre pressure gauge to ensure accuracy. Your vehicle's
handbook provides the correct pressure settings. Many modern vehicles also
feature Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS), which alert you when
pressure is too low, helping you avoid accidents and tyre wear.
- Condition: Inspect your tyres for any
cuts, splits, or embedded objects like glass or nails that could lead to
punctures. Don’t forget to check your spare tyre as well.
- Tread Depth: Tyre tread depth is
critical for grip and safety. While the 20p coin test is a quick method, a
tyre depth gauge offers more precise measurements. If you’re unsure, visit
a professional garage for advice.
Keeping these factors
in check will help you maintain safe tyres and a safer driving experience.
